CEO & Co-founder
As you invest in the best ways to educate your family, you want to know that the guide you choose to partner with understands your needs and those of your children. Nels does. In his words, “Growing up, I experienced both homeschool and public school. Although both gave me many great learning opportunities, I always longed for more interaction with like-minded peers and adults in a thriving community of learning.” This experience led Nels to co-found Williamsburg with his best friend, James Ure, in 2008. Today, Nels is thrilled to be building a positive and challenging learning environment for Williamsburg students, including his children, that wasn’t available during his youth.
Nels studied liberal arts in college and went on to earn an MBA from the Acton School of Business in Austin, Texas. He lives in Saint George, Utah, with his wife and five kids. Nels loves cycling, backpacking, meditating, reading great books, and spending quality time with his family and friends. He believes in starting each day with a power green smoothie.

James Ure is the co-founder of Williamsburg Learning, a K-12 education company that prepares students to live meaningful, abundant lives in the 21st century.
As chief architect of The Williamsburg Curriculum, James built an accredited academic program that has taught thousands of students how to think—not what to think—and empowers teachers to facilitate transformational learning experiences. James is also a co-founder of Williamsburg Adventures, an adventure travel company that leads students and educators on outdoor adventures and international humanitarian trips. James has taught government and literature on the high school and college levels and was named one of the top five online teachers in America. He has served on numerous education committees and boards.
James studied liberal arts in college and, inspired by an internship in the State House of Representatives, went on to earn a law degree from South Texas College of Law. He graduated summa cum laude with an emphasis in Constitutional Law.
James and his partner Ange live by their own rules and have fun creating what they call a “LEAF” family with their kids—a family that is Loving, Easy, Adventurous, and Fun. They spend 4-6 weeks a year adventuring together around the world. James enjoys fitness, mindfulness, and yoga, and has completed the Boston Marathon.
